of morphia by the Opium Farmer did actually send a part of the

trade to Japan, in particularly to Nagasaki. Moreover one of the

licensees here has been asked by the brokers to establish a branch

in Kiaochau.

The trade in morphis with the Far East is so well es-

tablished that syndicates are formed in Great Britain to buy up

corner" the crop of Turkish opium from which it is prepared.

One such syndicate is operating now; for an abundant crop this

year following a poor one last year has not been followed by the

fall in price that would result if the market were open.

and other Governments may have caused the price of the drugs to
